SDS seminar series: Dr. Jasmine Damle on 'Nativism, Regionalism, and the Legitimization of Violence; The MNS way on 26 Feb, 2016

 

 About the talk:

Nativism, Regionalism and the Legitimization of Violence: The MNS way.
The paper attempts to look at the genesis of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), a relatively newly formed political party which is a splinter faction of the Shiv Sena (SS) party lead by Mr.Raj Thackeray. The party was formed on 9th March 2006. The paper tries to analyze the genesis,growth and reassertion of Marathi identity by attempting to revive regionalism and nativism.


About the speaker:

Jasmine Damle is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Study of Developing Societies, School of Development Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences. She received her MA, Mphil, PhD in Sociology from Pune University. Her Postdoctoral research was on the impact of Hotel industry on the development of Pune city from 1989-1999. She has published two books: Beyond Economic Development (Mittal: 2001) and Pune: Tradition to Market: A study of changing trends in consumption with special reference to service sector in Hotel industry (Kalpaaz: 2011). Her area of specialization is sociology of development. She has a sustained interest in the process of development, urban poverty, crime, social justice, SEZs, Globalization and QOL of software executives.
